Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI)
Capital Value:
$ > 500 million

Client:
Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR)
Project Summary:
TMR is progressing planning a Detailed Business Case for new and upgraded infrastructure at the Mooloolah River Interchange.
The interchange services areas of significant residential and commercial development (including Caloundra South) and will deliver the missing link between the Sunshine Motorway and Kawana Way, crossing the Mooloolah River. The MRI project will provide capacity and safety benefits in a critical part of the Sunshine Coast road network. The MRI project will also address localised issues such as operational and capacity constraints on the Sunshine Motorway, safety risks due to lane weaving, and local and regional traffic separation.
The project will include:
- a major upgrade to the Mooloolah River Interchange and existing connections to the Sunshine Motorways east-west and north-south links, and Nicklin Way
- a new road connection across the Mooloolah River connecting the upgraded interchange with Kawana Way at Parrearra
- upgrading the Sunshine Motorway from the Mooloolah River interchange to Kawana Way from 2 to 4 lanes
- new local road links, including a direct connection for northbound traffic on Nicklin Way to Brisbane Road in Mooloolaba, and a new link between Karawatha Drive in Mountain Creek and Brisbane Road.
The MRI will provide the capacity to support significant population growth in the region, including associated increased demand on the road network and the need to connect the community with employment. Delivery of the MRI project is a key step in improving the north-south connectivity of the Sunshine Coast transport network.
